Monarch Make-Believe
Many years ago,
in a time of great need,
mimicking a Monarch,
a Viceroy fluttered into my life,
changing everything.
Stealing me away from another,
she elevated my status
and placed me onto a virtual throne
next to her,
and shared wealth with me.
Times were good,
until the illusions started cracking
and reality began appearing through.
Next came deep dept,
in times growing harsher than before,
the lies and deceptions became clear.
Trust lost,
struggling on,
all illusions gone,
she still stood by my side,
in a long-distance way,
so I let her stay within a shared fantasy.
Although not a Monarch,
or even a Viceroy,
she loved me greatly,
and the caring was real.
Her lies were compulsive,
and well meaning
attempts to better my life.
Overcoming anger and trust issues,
I found that I could not toss her
back into the winds alone.
We navigated the winds together,
separately.
Time blew us forward,
and we struggled on
within its furious breeze.
Not a Monarch Mate
for this aging artist,
but a geographically distant
loving dreamer.
At least we can dream of better things
together,
in our own realities.
All dreams and shared fantasies aside,
here I sit,
still
literally alone,
these many years later,
wondering,
other than love,
just what is real?
